Transportation
The Transportation Department takes pride in providing bus transportation to approximately 10,000 students who reside beyond the reasonable limits from their school of attendance. We operate within a 750 square mile range, not an easy feat, but we work as a team. Desert Sands owns and operates 67 school buses; 27 are Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and 40 diesel buses.
The District operates and maintains its own fueling station on site that provides both conventional fuel (unleaded, diesel) as well as CNG, to both its bus fleet and white fleet vehicles.
Our mechanics ensure that all our school buses receive their regularly scheduled 3,000 mile/45 day maintenance service. In addition, all our school buses are inspected and re-certified each year by the California Highway Patrols', Motor Carrier Division. Desert Sands has received a Satisfactory Rating each year. Those two processes ensure that all our school buses are running in safe, operating conditions so they can safely transport America's future; Our students.
The Transportation Department is an important part of the the Educational process. It is the first and last link between the student and the district. As soon as students board the yellow school bus, they are under the responsibility of the school bus driver. And upon getting off at their bus stop, they are the last link until another day of learning begins.
